Second Home Early Learning

The things that made this space our top pick when considering daycares were the small roll, low ratio of kaiako to tamariki, and that children were not separated by ages. These are all beneficial but they only scratch the surface of what makes Second Home a magical place to be a part of.Each kaiako (or aunty) is generous with their time, knowledge, and aroha. They treasure each child and accept them as whole individuals. They align themselves to Emmi Pikler and Reggio Emilia pedagogies and are committed to lifelong learning, which they share with each other at regular catch-ups. Aunties are open and excited to be with your child, always willing to have conversations about how your child is going and support your parenting. The learning stories that the aunties create are thoughtful and insightful, capturing the essence of your child and provoking conversation about your child's development.Second Home has valuable tikanga that enable the tamariki to bring good habits to their own home. Things like taking shoes off before entering the space, not wearing hats during kai rituals, separating kai from their plates, or otherwise tidying up after themselves are practices taught young. Introducing these concepts early shows meaningful trust in the children and fosters a great sense of autonomy and respect for others, the space, resources, and self. The biggest surprise we've had is the continuous and reciprocal learning relationship between the aunties, children, and parents. Second Home prioritises holding space for feeling and expressing emotions, setting and upholding boundaries, and speaking your truth. After attending Second Home for two years our son has grown to be more confident, patient, empathetic, and truly in touch with his feelings and self. We are extremely grateful to be a part of this wonderful space and to everyone who makes it what it is.

Second Home Early Learning is a truly special community- a real whānau! The Aunties bring deep passion to their mahi, nurturing tamariki with great care and connection. They are endlessly creative, thoughtfully evolving daily rituals that foster a strong sense of belonging and build confidence in the children. We've loved watching our tamariki's journeys unfold here, it's been more than we ever imagined.

Second Home has become an extension of our family. The Aunties care for our children with so much love, warmth, and genuine attention- it's something you feel instantly. The incorporation of te reo Māori is beautiful and meanigful, and the communication with parents is unparalleled- we always know hoe our children are doing and feel completely connected. We're so grateful to be part of such a special community and couldn't have asked for a better start for Kit. Thank you!

From the moment we walked through the doors, we knew we had found something special. The level of love, care, and genuine commitment the Aunties show both the children and parents is incomparable. It didn't take long for Ollie to settle in and for this to become her second home. Seeing how happy and confident she is there says everything about the environment the Aunties have created. As a parent, the reassurance and communication from the tea, has been incredible. From day one, I've felt complete confidence leaving Ollie in their care and have never had to worry. We feel so grateful to be part of such a nurturing, supportive community.
